Being Human Festival 2023

The Being Human Festival celebrates ways in which the humanities inspire and enrich our everyday lives, help us to understand ourselves and our relationships with others. This year the University of Nottingham will be an official Being Human Festival Hub, facilitating a range of events on the theme of Rhyme and Reason. This includes our event in philosophy of mental health!

EVENT:
How Can We Create Meaning? Creativity, Making Meaning and Mental Health

14th November 2023, 2-4pm
Middle Street Resource Centre
74 Middle Street
Beeston
Nottingham
NG9 2AR

ALL WELCOME!

How does being creative connect to mental health, making meaning, and being human? Is it rhyme, reason, both?

Sometimes, poor mental health can block creativity and involve a loss of meaning. Lewis Capaldi has spoken about how his staggering success from his first album caused problems with writing his second. Some famous artists have produced their most famous work while in crisis, using creativity to make sense of what’s around them.

More of us now appreciate that being creative can play a vital role in improving mental health. Equally, learning about the connections between creativity and mental health can help to better support good mental health.

This 2-hour interactive event will explore the links between mental health and making meaning through art, music, poetry, and conversation. Audiences will explore how creative therapies support people in making meaning. They will discuss, see, and hear examples, and reflect on the value Middle Street Resource Centre brings to its community.

PARTICIPATION:

Feel free to just come along and join the exploration! If you would like to participate even more, and share and experience of meaning making, or your understanding of meaning in relation to mental health (for instance, through objects, or artwork), then please contact Craig French to express an interest.
